Tragedy? Why is ‘Macbeth’ considered such? Tragedy, as defined by the American HeritageÒ dictionary is a drama or literary work in which the main character is brought to ruin or suffers extreme sorrow, especially as a consequence of a tragic flaw, moral weakness, or inability to cope with unfavorable circumstances. Macbeth and Banquo impressed Duncan, the King of Scotland because of two invasions they won victory of, at the same time, was threatened of Cawdor’s treason, so he was executed, and Macbeth was hailed as the Thane of Cawdor. Simultaneously, Macbeth and Banquo are on their way home from war, when a trio of witches hindered their way ad prophesized that Macbeth would be hailed Thane of Cawdor, and Banquo, would become the father of kings. They speculated about these strange predictions, no sooner than later, the king’s messengers informed him that he was indeed hailed to the position, he began to believe the trio, but still, Banquo refused to do so. They arrived at Duncan’s presence, and the king was invited to the Thane’s palace; craving for his position, he together with his wife, plotted to assassinate him. The two visiting nobles, Lennox and Macduff, found the lifeless body, and alerted everyone about the tragic happening, while the couple pretended to be in lachrymose, then after, Macbeth was appointed king. Afraid of the same scenario happening to them, the king’s two sons, fled to Ireland and Scotland, while all these was taking place, Banquo was filled with speculation of the sudden rise of power of his confidante, he also remembers the prophesy and decides to flee with his son, Fleance, being afraid of the new king’s jealousy, but his forecast was right, the king was envious, so he plotted to kill them, but Fleance managed to escape. Days later, Macbeth threw a feast for his compatriots, thus, he was fearing of Banquo’s ghost appearing unto his throne, and his actions confided the Scottish nobles that he was guilty of Duncan’s assisination, and Macduff went to England to aid Malcom’s revenge. He sought aid and guidance from the three witches, and they warned him to fear Lord Macduff, but they also told them that no terror would come unless the until great Birnham Wood onto high Dunsinane hill shall come, and ordered that this Lord’s family to their grave. Macduff swore to kill Macbeth with his own hand, and when they reached Birnahiyi Wood, he ordered his soldiers to make seem that the forest was moving, and Macbeth was alerted to defend himself. Lady Macbeth, was chafing under her guilt, was killed by the madness of her spirit on the eve of Macduff’s attack. The king and his army rushed out to attack the avenging forces, noticing that the forest has moved. Finally, the two leaders met face to face, and was in combat, but Macbeth told his enemy that he could not kill him, but over the burning anger over the slaughter of his family, he struck him with his sword. And eventually, Malcolm, the rightful heir, was brought to the throne of Scotland.
